Macro performance is top notch at maximum magnification of 1:2. If you need 1:1 you must use a matched extension tube. Performance at a distance is excellent. This lens is a great general-purpose lens. Its soft bokeh makes it a first choice for portraiture. It's tack sharp from f2.5 and up. If you are picky you may see a slight softening in contrast at f2.5. Fringing and CA is barely noticeable at close inspection. Tamron's BBAR coating is very effective.
